Paying Parent and Receiving Parent.

The ‘Paying-Parent’ is defined as the parent of the child, who is not the full time carer and does not live with the child full-time.

The ‘Receiving-Parent’ is defined as the one who receives child maintenance from the ‘Paying-Parent’ and cares and lives with the child full-time. Note – it is not only biological parents that qualify as the receiving parent. This person could be a grandparent or guardian of any sort.

You’re eligible to apply for child maintenance yourself if you are a child who lives in Scotland. You may not apply for this service if you are living outside of the UK.

Child support can be arranged individually through the Child Support Agency or through the Child Maintenance Service.

How to apply

You will need to have certain information to hand such as your National Insurance Number, Bank Account details and information about the child’s parents, if it is needed, such as full names and in some cases addresses.

No personal details will be available to anyone else unless regimented to do so by the court. Your information is used to create and run your Childs support account and sometimes can be used in order to assist the finding of the ‘Paying-Parent’. (DATA PROTECTION ACT – controls how your information is used).

For clarification of these points we suggest you call the Child Support Agency Helpline on 0843 506 9854 and speak to an advisor

If the paying parents details and contact methods are not known then the services can assist in locating them. However if no such person can be found then the receiving parent cannot open a case.

Usually your Servicing Manager will contact you directly within 12 weeks of your application but if obstacles are met, such as difficulty contacting the paying-parent then this length of time could reach up to 26 weeks.

If you have any concerns about any of these points we suggest you call the CSA number on 0843 506 9854 and speak to an advisor

How to pay

When applying for Child Support using Child maintenance service or the Child Support Agency, the funds can be paid either directly to the receiving parent, if both parties agree, directly to the paying parents wages or by direct debit. In this case it will be organised by the Servicing Manager.

Once the amount due to be paid to the receiving parent is set by the Servicing Manager you can arrange payment individually, providing both paying parent and receiving parent agree on this method. This is called Maintenance Direct or Direct Pay depending on which service you are using (Child Maintenance service or Child Support Agency).

For clarification of these points we suggest you call the CSA contact number on 0843 506 9854 and speak to an advisor
