Job seekers allowance is a financial benefit for people who are seeking employment. It can be up to £56.80 per week.

To apply for Job seekers Allowance you must be 18 years of age or over and be available for work. After applying for the funding you must attend an interview in order to complete your claim.
What you may receive.
JSA is only available on a contribution basis for 6 months, (182 Days) after this time is up you may be entitled to receive income based JSA. If you are aged 16-24 you may be entitled to receive up to £56.80 and if you are 25 years of age or older the amount can be up to £71.70.
You could receive this amount if in the last 2 years you have paid sufficient National Insurance Contributions (NIC’s).

Income based Job Seekers Allowance is means tested and therefore the amount of savings or incomings you have could affect the amount you are entitled to. You may still receive this if you have not paid enough NIC’s in the last two years but are on a low income.
Payments of job seekers allowance are made into the receiver’s bank account and are usually made every 2 weeks.
Here are some examples of the amounts you could receive depending on your status:
Single (under 25) – £56.80
Single (25 or over) – £71.70
Couples (both 18 or over) – £112.55
Lone parent (18 or over) – £71.70
Lone parent (under 18) – £56.80

Note- Job Seekers Allowance does NOT affect Child Tax Credit or Child Benefits.
Although you have to be 18 or over to receive the benefit there are some exceptions if you are 16 or 17. You must not be in full time education to be entitled to Job Seekers Allowance and you must live in England, Scotland or Wales. To complete your claim you must go to an interview and you must be available for and actively seeking work. If you are already in work you must be on average working less than 16 hours a week.
If you are wishing to claim for Income based job seekers allowance you and your partner must (if there is a partner involved) have les than £16,000 in savings and on average work less than 24 hours a week between you (if applicable).
Note that the eligibility rules are different if you live in Northern Ireland.
How to claim
The quickest way to receive funding is through a rapid reclaim. These can only be made if you have received Job Seekers Allowance in the last 182 days (approximately 6 months). Rapid reclaims can be done online and usually take around 10 minutes.

You will not receive any Job Seekers Allowance if you do not attend an interview. When you apply, you will receive a phone call within 2 working days to arrange this interview. At the interview you will be asked to discuss things such as what steps can be taken in order to improve your chances of gaining work for example help writing a CV, improving basic skills etc.
